Starting the evening of Sunday 8/16/26 with an anticipated completion on Saturday 8/22/26, a paving project will be taking place in the Pine Springs area of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. During this closure there will be no parking at the Pine Springs Trailhead. Those that want to hike trails such as Devils Hall or Guadalupe Peak must park at the visitor center and follow a .25-mile path to the trailhead. Wilderness permit holders will also need to park at the visitor center.

The Williams Ranch Road is currently impassable and closed to public access due to unsafe conditions.
The hike to Devil's Hall is rated as strenuous. The portion of the route in the wash requires rock scrambling and is dangerous when wet or if water is present. The wash surface is loose gravel and rocks and may be unstable.
Dog Canyon, the park's remote north district, is only seven miles as the crow files, but a full two hour drive [one-way] from Pine Springs through a panoramic Chihuahuan Desert and mountain landscape.
Dog Canyon lies in a secluded, forested canyon on the north end of the park at an elevation of 6,300 feet. Much of the joy of Dog Canyon is its remote nature, and the drive there from U.S. Highway 62/180 is well worth the effort. Dog Canyon is a 70-mile drive from the nearest town of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is 110 miles from the Pine Spring Visitor Center & Campground (a 2 hour drive time). New Mexico Highway 137 (Queen Highway) ends at the state line; the short portion of the road inside the park is gravel.

No roads pass through the heart of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. However, a series of roads lead to, and provide access within the park. The Dark Canyon Road (CR 408) and New Mexico State Road 137 provide access to Dog Canyon from U.S. Highway 62/180 in New Mexico.

Be mindful of wildlife crossing the highway, especially at dawn and dusk.
The highways are paved but once you arrive in the park, the road is graded gravel. Pullouts along the highway will have variable conditions, ranging from dirt to accessible facilities.
